Summary: "A Great sonic experience"

I am not sure why people dog on this album. I have always enjoyed this album and consider this to be a great production by Boston. Despite some of the urges for a past vocal performance that Boston had in the first albums some may long for, this album holds its own. The dueling harmonic vocals and counterpoint makes for something nice and unique for rock music. This record is a polished work with strong harmonies, hard guitars, and cool jamming sessions of the group. The work is something of a cross between heavy Jim Steinman anthems, some not-so-sappy Chicago-style lyrics and Desmond Child metal edge with some awesome keyboards all wrapped in the Boston style of arena rock.

Summary: "Very good album."

This 1994 Boston album has taken some hits from critics. Personally, I think it's one of their best albums. Sure, it has some mellow/slow songs on it, but these songs are good and I've come to like them more over time. When Boston does slower songs, they still tend to have that classic Boston heavy guitar tone. Boston's overall sound is something they can call their own. Very unique. No other bands that I can think of sound like them.

The title track is about 12 minutes long broken into four parts. This song makes up for the slower songs, as this song plain rocks. The electric guitar is heavy and ferocious - some of Boston's best guitar work. Fran Cosmo is the vocalist and does a good job, replacing Brad Delp.

It's worth it to purchase this album for the title track alone. It's my personal favorite Boston song. I recommend this album.

Summary: "It rocks pretty hard"

I was not a fan of Boston "back in the day" (I wasn't even around then) but I have to say this is an awesome rock record. The highlight for me is the titular "Walk On Medley" split into the four tracks "Walkin' At Night", "Walk On", "Get Organ-ized" and "Walk On (some more)". As a single 12-minute song (the tracks flow into each other) it's gotta be one of the best rock songs I've ever heard. If you want to pick a track, I'd have to say "Walk On" is the best of them; it's under 3 minutes long but has an incredible amount of passion.

The other songs are not quite as jaw-droppingly amazing. "Surrender to Me" and "We Can Make It" are good despite being a bit too synthy-muzak sounding; they also have the most recognizable melodies apart from "Walk On Medley". "Livin' For You" is pretty skippable.

Overall, four stars. "Walk On Medley" is just that good, and even "Livin' For You" has a nice harmonic moment or two, just like I expected from a Boston album.

Summary: "Bleh"

Boston's Walk On sounds like a potentially good Boston album infected by predictable 80s hair metal. Some good Boston songs mixed with some songs that could have been written by any unambitious 80s metal band. We all miss Brad Delp, and that's bound to affect our view of Boston albums released after his death, but his contributions to Boston's songwriting is painfully and noticeably absent here.

Summary: "To those who gave this album a poor rating, let's be fair here..."

It's interesting to look at how widespread the voting is on this album. Obviously, everyone has their own tastes and likes and dislikes (and yes, I know it's not Brad) but the album is musically, excellent. Sure, the lyrics are a bit lame, but the musicianship is awesome. Tom is a genius with a guitar as well as a soundboard. For example, notice how all the instruments are equally discernable and balanced. The harmonies are polished and spot-on perfect. Just put your bias aside for a moment and review the album on it's own merit, not in comparison to an album he made 33 years ago.
