Summary: "How considerate of them to make their first three albums...."

How considerate of them to make their first three albums their best. This greatly simplifies selecting albums for your collection. Unlike many other groups (and, no, I won't mention the Stones,) Tom and Brad had the decency to realize that they could say what they had to say in their first few albums. Boston's subsequent albums are simply a waste of your money. Anyway, their debut album is definitely the best, followed by "Third Stage" and then "Don't Look Back." While DLB included the excellent title song, the album as a whole sounded like a rush job. (Tom often confirmed that this was actually the case.) While we do indeed have Boston to blame for the excesses of Foreigner, Styx, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Kansas, and others, I can't hold that against them. "Third Stage" remains an excellent album, with at least four of their most memorable songs. The only real problem with this CD is that, for a variety of reasons, it has never been remastered by Tom as it ought to have been. (For those familiar with the story of this album, they will understand. It sounds to me like the source material may not be that much better than what was used for the original album and CD.) If you don't own this album, you should.

Summary: "Best Boston"

Third Stage is Boston's best album, because it's the most diversified. Yes, Tom's guitar is still so very recognizable and definitive of their sound (as usual), but this album features a little bit of everything, from soft rock ballads (Amanda) to harder and more energetic tunes, such as Cool the Engines. I particularly like Hollyann, I Think I Like It, We're Ready, and Can'tcha Say. This album is musically superior, but technically inferior. The 8 years that it took to complete this album is legendary. One can tell that technical problems were aplenty, as certain songs lack fullness in bass and it almost sounds like it's coming through a transistor radio. However, if one can ignore these problems, they can enjoy a fine album worthy of praise. It's too bad that the album was already outdated by the time it was released, because most of the songs were written and performed in 1981. As for me, I don't care if something is outdated--as long as it's good. How I rank the Boston albums through 1994: Third Stage, Walk On, Boston, Don't Look Back.

Summary: "Boston: Third Stage"

Tom Scholz's company, which manufactured the "Rockman", was a client of my ad agency. Besides designing the sales materials for their many various mobile audio and performance products, we aso did some a lot of promotion work for their rock group, "Boston."
This particular album cover was put together by me, from an idea drawing provided by a fan of the group, with me as the Senior Art Director for the agency handling the project.
The spaceship is, in reality, a top-down view of the organ in the Old North Church, in the city of Boston, with the "Boston" signature spacecraft in the area where the keyboard would normally be.
You really had to be a die-hard "Boston" fan to really enjoy this album --which I wasn't. However, the vinyl album cover is still in my design portfolio.

Summary: "6 years to get the THIRD STAGE"

Best Boston album and one of the best symphonic rock albums ever.
As Scholz relates in the liner notes, they took around 6 years to make this record. It's impressive, such a stack of sounds mixed and linked, lots of troubles with the the oldest tape tracks (they got stuck), a man with long arms to fix the tapes from different desks and most of all, a "space" travel full of space ships and other UFO sounds made without using violins or synths.
Brad shows a great voice from sweet modulations to the highest tone rates!
I've listened to it lots of times and I never get fed up with.
I really recommend it. It's great!
---------------------------------
